Hertius's friend, a professor with the delightful name of Cox-Raythwaite and big chemical-stained hands, analyzes clues and does lots of sharp thinking. And an eager young newshound snoops quite productively.
There are two well drawn villains: the arrogant nephew who's determined to inherit the Herapath property, and an elegant young man (ex-secretary to Mr. Herapath) who looks like an actor and also wants a piece of the property.
Published in 1921, this novel revolves around a contested will - a traditional theme in British mysteries. I think what really gives the novel its Edwardian flavor is the charm and eccentricity of the characters, described with such flair and relish.
J. S. Fletcher is a very fine writer, urbane and witty, partial to young people on love - and a master of complex plots. He deserves lasting literary fame. Critics attribute his present obscurity to his lack of a strong reoccurring investigator. In modern marketing terms, he never developed a brand. He starts fresh with every book, with a new cast of characters. To me this is admirably inventive.
Fletcher may not have a Sherlock Holmes or Miss Marple, but each of his mysteries invites us into a fascinating circle of puzzled and distressed ladies and gentlemen whose concerns I find totally absorbing.
This Resurrected Press edition has well designed pages and a nice little introduction.

J.S.Fletcher has rather silly story lines but his characters are good and the writing is amusing. I've read just about all his books now & they're perfect for unwinding at the end of a day.
Most of the book follows the "detectives" who are being mislead or distracted, while the actual detection takes place behind the scenes and is only summarily explained. But the usual good writing and twisty plotting.
I'm thrilled to find so many long ago mystery writers. Thank you Resurrected Press!
A good read, full of the usual Fletcher plot twists and turns, but, not one of his best efforts. The plotting and character development are up to the usual Fletcher standard, but, the solution to the mystery is a little trite, downright abrupt and essentially a completely out-of-the-blue ending when compared to the rest of the story. They can't all be up to the standard of The Middle Temple Murder, or, some of Fletcher's better works I suppose. In any case, the story is a good read, and, unless you are expecting the tale to be solved with clues presented in the plot, not a bad story. It's not quite,"the butler did it," but, not far off.
